Why it matters
While most people understand the need to measure the opening of their garage, many people don't realise how important it is to measure the interior. Every part of the garage door system takes up space inside the garage, so you must check that there is enough space to house them without causing any issues. The most important measurement is the amount of headroom that your garage has. If there isn't enough headroom, the tracks of certain systems will not be able to fit in the space above the door. Knowing how much space you have to work with allows you to choose a garage door that your garage can accommodate.

Taking accurate measurements
To ensure the accuracy of your measurements, your tape measure must be level. There are a couple of ways to do this. The first way is to use a level surface that is parallel to the dimension you are measuring. For example, if you were to measure the width of the opening of your garage, you could put the tape measure across the top of the frame.
The second way to do this is to use markers. Use your tape measure to find and mark two parallel points that you can measure from. Keep in mind that you want the markings to be clear. Tape can be a good way to do this as you can use the side of the tape to know exactly where the marked point is.
Measuring the opening
Before you start measuring the opening of your garage, you will need to check for any irregularities that may cause issues. You want to ensure that the frame around the opening is level. Once you have ensured that the opening is free from obstructions, you can begin measuring. The measurements you need are the height and width of the opening. Measure from the top of the opening to the bottom to get the height and from the right side to the left to get the width.
